Holy Spirit!

I’ve got a devotional book titled “Tozer on the Holy Spirit: A 366-Day Devotional” which is completely made up of the writings of A.W. Tozer. Each one talks about the Holy Spirit which has made this book a real blessing in my current season of life. Over the past year (one year in December) God has walked me through some deep, dark pains and sin to a point where I no longer live in guilt and shame but can truly say that I walk in freedom instead (which is not to mean I do not stumble or fall, but simply that I am not bound by guilt or shame and instead turn to Christ, in whom I have freedom). I feel that the current season of my life is a process of drawing near to God (the previous season being a season of repentance) through the Holy Spirit. It is the role of the Spirit to point us in the direction of Christ. Another way of looking at it is that scripture was written by the Spirit who is madly in love with Christ — hence all of scripture points to Him. What a beautiful way of looking at the Spirit, a person of the Trinity who is lovesick over Christ; all He can do is talk about Him! And to think, that very same Spirit dwells within each and every believer in Christ.

We may be sure of one thing, that for our deep trouble there is no cure apart from a visitation, yes, an invasion of power from above.

Only the Spirit Himself can show us what is wrong with us and only the Spirit can prescribe the cure.

Only the Spirit can save us from the numbing unreality of Spiritless Christianity.

Only the Spirit can show us the Father and the Son.

Only the inworking of the Spirit’s power can discover to us the solemn majesty and the heart ravishing mystery of the Triune God.

– A.W. Tozer, the Pursuit of Man.

Tozer certainly has a way with words. the “numbing unreality of Spiritless Christianity” — haven’t we all been there? If I could just study the Word more, or pray more often or stop sinning — there is no power within us outside of the power of the Holy Spirit. Spiritless Christianity is powerless Christianity which is of no value to anyone.
